MasterPatent provides three core services to our clients:
- Expert patent services to protect intellectual property with the broadest coverage.
- Prototyping and engineering expertise to transform ideas and concepts into reality.
- Startup consulting to develop a business into a profitable and scalable venture.
We specialize in working with inventors, entrepreneurs, and startups. Our expertise is identifying, protecting, and developing technologies that involve electronics, software, mechanical, and chemical components. MasterPatent was founded by Dr. Erik Chmelar, who’s passion is to ensure innovators will achieve their goals and succeed in bringing their creations to life.
Dr. Chmelar has been a Registered Patent Agent of the United States Patent and Trademark Office since 2007 (#61041 ). He has helped many inventors and entrepreneurs realize the potential of their creations by obtaining the broadest patent protection possible. Because Dr. Chmelar is an inventor and entrepreneur himself, he is dedicated to maximizing results within any budget. Furthermore, his extensive experience as an engineer and R&D scientist enables him to rapidly understand complex inventions, identify fundamental innovations, and create alternate embodiments.
Dr. Chmelar earned his PhD in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Stanford University in 2004, and holds MS and BS degrees in Electrical Engineering, a BS in Chemical Physics, and an MBA in Management. In addition to being a Registered Patent Agent of the USPTO, he is a Licensed Professional Engineer of the State of Michigan, Senior Member and Representative of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), Electrical and Computer Engineering University Program Evaluator for the Accreditation Board of Engineering and Technology (ABET), and Certified Project Management Professional (PMP) and Agile Certified Practitioner (ACP) by the Project Management Institute (PMI). Dr. Chmelar served as a consulting assistant professor at Stanford and an adjunct professor at Saginaw Valley State University.
Since 1999 Dr. Chmelar has worked as an engineer and R&D scientist in semiconductors, electronics, medical devices industries for Cisco Systems, Xilinx, LSI, Verdura, and Stryker. He has developed technologies that include biophotonics, high-speed data communication circuit architectures, resonant wireless power transfer, ultrasonically assisted drilling, semiconductor test methods and architectures, surgical robotics, and analog standard cell layout and synthesis. He has been granted dozens of patents for his inventions.
Dr. Chmelar founded several startups in sports and semiconductor industries. He built Alpha Skateboard Company from inventions he created to improve skateboard equipment, and co-founded Verdura Systems based on inventions that enhance high-speed data communications. For the past several years Dr. Chmelar has been teaching entrepreneurs how to create and launch startups through accelerator programs with the University of Michigan, Western Michigan University, and the National Science Foundation. He served as an industry mentor for the WMU Starting Gate accelerator and the U-M/NSF I-Corps program, and served as faculty for the WMU/NSF I-Corps program.
